What is the Memphis Challenge?

The Memphis Challenge (MC) coaches high-achieving, underrepresented students, through leadership and professional development, preparing them to become future Memphis leaders.


How can I apply to the Memphis Challenge program?

The following criteria are necessary for consideration:
  • Be a rising 11th (see Jr. MC below) or 12th grade student at any Memphis city or Shelby county, public or private school
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher
  • ACT score of at least 25 or a combined SAT score of 1,800 (Writing, Math, Critical Reading)
  • A letter of recommendation from someone (not a family member) who can speak to one of the following attributes in reference to you: character, leadership and/or dedication.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, particularly in community service
  • Personal Statement Essay



How can I apply to the Jr. MC program?

  • Be a rising 11th grade student at any Memphis city, county public or private school
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher
  • A letter of recommendation from someone (not a family member) who can speak to one of the following attributes in reference to you: character, leadership and/or dedication.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, particularly in community service
  • Personal Statement Essay



When does The Memphis Challenge program year begin?

The Memphis Challenge Program begins in September and runs throughout the academic calendar year (Sept - May).


Where are the MC Workshops held?

MC Workshops are held at the Emerge Memphis Office Building at 516 Tennessee Street unless otherwise instructed.


Is there a dress code for the workshop?

Yes.  Attire for all workshops is professional.  School uniforms are acceptable.  Jeans, t-shirts and tennis shoes are not acceptable attire.  Professional attire is defined as business casual - for ladies, slacks or a skirt with a nice blouse; for gentlemen, khakis or slacks with a polo or button down shirt.


Will transportation be provided to students to attend workshops?

No. It is the responsibility of the student/parent to provide transportation to and from the workshops or any off-site activity (i.e. community service outing or special events).


Can a student miss a workshop?

  • To benefit fully from the Memphis Challenge program, students cannot miss more than three (3) workshops. 
  • Attendance at workshops is mandatory for your continued participation in The  Memphis Challenge or Junior MC.
  • If you are unable to attend scheduled workshops it is your responsibility to let The Memphis Challenge staff know prior to the event.
  • Failure to fulfill this responsibility will result in termination from The Memphis Challenge Program.  Consequently, students may withdraw from the program at any time.  In the case of withdrawal, a written explanation is required for our records.



What are the Internship Requirements?

The purpose of the internship program is to provide a challenging and rewarding internship experience to students preparing them to become future Memphis leaders.
  • To be eligible for an internship you must be a graduate of the MC program and in good standing with the program
  • Successfully completed the mock interview and resume writing workshop.
  • Internships are with Memphis-based companies/not-for-profit organizations.
  • Students are considered for internships in their field of study. No student is guaranteed an internship.
  • Internships are typically six to eight weeks, beginning the first week of June and normally lasting through August.
  • Students who accept internships are expected to make a commitment for summer employment with their respective company for six to eight week period.
  • MC internships are paid internship experiences (some exceptions apply).
